yes, language has a set of rules (grammar) but the rules themselves are not subject to strict rules

I don't think normative implies strict rules? "Explicit is better than implicit" is a normative claim with no strict prescription.

hmm, so let's think of examples "heteronormative" to mean implies "don't be gay", pretty prescriptive no?

(also heteronormative is often used to cover a lot of more vague things as well as a specific prescription against being gay)

I'm not sure if you're actually going to define it for me because you think I don't know what it means or just disagreeing? 😕

Disagreeing. It tends to get used for a lot of things like e.g. cultural bias against men hugging that are not precisely gay.

men hugging is perceived as behaviourally gay by homophobes in the West

It is, but my point there was that it's hard to interpret this as strict rule when the effects are so broad and fuzzy at the edges

but I've been arguing exactly against strict rules for semantics.

our brain's method of computing semantics is way fuzzier but also simpler.

I think the way brains work and the way technical terms work don't necessarily line up very well.

(And that "normative" and "prescriptive" are both fairly technical terms)

ok, I think technical terms are fine but these words aren't technical in all contexts

Hmm that's true but I think here the technical use predates colloquial use, and when that happens I try to retain technical usage.

that's linguistic prescription if you think others will/should follow suit tho... I just don't think that's how language works
