        I use git*lab* for anything I start, git*hub* if its pre-existing.

gitlab itself is open source - so we also have a private self-hosted version.

thanks for that — just out of curiosity does gitlab give unlimited free private repos to me as an academic?

unlimited free private repos for you as a human being, I think is the rule (I think some total storage limits apply)

I think you have to harm a human being or through inaction, cause one to be harmed.

I have certainly through inaction allowed many humans to be harmed. I live in the West. 😔

I use it for OSS projects, but use BitBucket for everything else (private stuff).

Because private repos are free on BitBucket, pretty much.

I do too, but probably won’t be forever. (also, sourcetree is a nice free git client.)

I also don’t do a lot of branching, mostly for versioning, less for collaboration. (I know how to use CLI git, but it scares me.)

I collected some data on this recently. Lots of people use Github to store/share, a lot less use it for version control.
