familiarity with GDAL will help, most packages use it one way or another, colleagues swear by Iris and Cartopy

I'd say R has edge on Py here, but it's as massively confusing and fragmented, leaflet and GeoJSON and GDAL v. imp. common ground
-
PRO.4 has new site with maps created using Python, in the sources somewhere: http://proj4.org/projections/index.html …

oh thanks for help — to clarify I'm using the USA census' citySDK so I'm using Python and JS. No R API anyway.
-
I could move to R but project already started and many other stuff written in Python. I'll check out your recommendations!

-
interested to hear how you go!
-
for perhaps obv reasons I can't divulge too much of the specifics (goal of project) but yeah I'll share what I manage over tweets!

prepare for some experimentation with the multitude of python GIS packages! Basemap is a good place to start.
-
thanks! I haven't graphed anything at all yet! I've only opened shape files in qgis!
-
Q's python interface is pretty useful too, but the API is poorly documented, unfortunately.
-
I keep getting errors on that front about it not loading python integration etc — regardless I doubt I need it, right?
-
Not for plotting GIS data, no. But does contain some nice processing elements (like calculating area of polygons on the geoid).
-
ah I see, what do you suggest in general basemap? Shapely? Geopandas?
-
I tend to use basemap & shapely. I spent 3 days trying to plot a polygon properly last week. Ended up using geopandas and descartes
-
properly?

If you're not already a GIS professional, I recommend reading up on projections, esp. if doing analysis. http://www.colorado.edu/geography/gcraft/notes/mapproj/mapproj_f.html …
-
not a professional at all. I'm using TIGER census data only for a project.
-
If not combining with any other GIS data, you should be good, then. Look forward to seeing what you can share!
-
prob only after publication or when ready as a preprint but will let you know as soon as!

-
thanks for tip!
-
Of course! I'm a developer that started in GIS, so I always advocate for more GIS knowledge. Your field seems fascinating, too!
