Does anybody know how Matlab became so big in science? What's the story? It's expensive, inflexible & not pedagogical. How did this happen?

It imposes considerably less cognitive load (in Sweller' sense) than NumPy does in early investigations.

No, early attempts at investigating things with code. Namespace control has long-term benefit but short-term cost.
