Does anybody know how Matlab became so big in science? What's the story? It's expensive, inflexible & not pedagogical. How did this happen?

Also, a student license is dirt cheap if you want to install it on your home machine while in school.

I think I was able to get it for the cost of the CD they burned the installer onto. Or it was free.
