Does anybody know how Matlab became so big in science? What's the story? It's expensive, inflexible & not pedagogical. How did this happen?

yes, of Matlab bigness specifically - very interested in the broader work too though
-
because I work in science and most ppl in my field use matlab and suck at coding because of it
-
oh, also **graphics**, lots of IDL-starters moved to Matlab circa 2002 because "finishing the plots was easier"
