prob cause basic maths is in c++ or something? But yeah, so if you can see them why do they call it closed source?

many write their own toolboxes/libraries/tools etc. as open source just as for python (e.g., SPM)
-
I guess MATLABs model will have to change, so that they can make a profit on their product against strong OS competition.
-
how do you think it'll change?
-
I don't know - must be very difficult. They could sell the IDE and toolboxes, but keep language and core functions free?...
-
... maybe incorporate other languages (python) into the IDE and provide tools for maintaining libraries (a la Anaconda)?
-
I definitely think a 'turnkey' multiplatform IDE with good library management could be commercial in an open source world...
-
...python tools, though great, are still a bit fragmented and hard to install/maintain.
-
I can also imagine a big market for cloud-based computation. I think the license fees will have to come down a lot, though.
