Does anybody know how Matlab became so big in science? What's the story? It's expensive, inflexible & not pedagogical. How did this happen?

It's not an uncommon perception. I have a friend working on a PhD in image processing and he says it's too slow.
-
tried and tested or just prefers C/C++?
-
I get the impression he tried it, but he uses Matlab. I wonder if his decision had to do with a profs out of date knowledge
-
that's always a shame

Yeah I think people often confuse this because they'll test something in base python vs a matrix operation in MATLAB
-
which isn't fair as base python wasn't designed to be fast. And all matlab is doing is wrapping a lin alg routine /2

I hate Matlab: How an IDE, a language, and a mentality harm
