the things I found frustrating were using spaces to separate values in a vector and the way default function arguments work

were you coming from Python?
-
R is my first/best language (though I do a bit of python too). I translated a load of matlab code into R to avoid using matlab

-
impressive! -
I say a lot. It was the functions to do some mixture model. It was mostly just copy and paste then adapting

-
that's still legit

Matlab is fine, parts of it I really like. At times I really wanted object oriented aspects (like python).
-
technically if I wanted to really troll you you can write objects in a functional language. I wrote objects in lisp.

-
but yeah it's not native

can't see the sourcecode... I recall recent tweet where fMRI analysis done with 2 dif versions had dif results.
-
yes it's somewhere on my profile and what instigated this discussion today actually
-
hey, might be fun to compare Matlab with Adobe Flash? With the latter dying out & replaced with opensource alternatives. anyway.
-
not exactly what I had in mind but perhaps can add a sentence on this.

if converting users is your aim, def. avoid making folks feel stupid for relying on it until now - codebashing doesn't win hearts
-
yeah, certainly not. 100% agree.
-
i always find it difficult to resist the impulse though :D
-
I'm not interested in making people feel stupid and I will try to avoid it

today, I think my main problem with Matlab is the communities. Not used much outside of academy, so had to learn diff for industry.
-
yep this is one of my points for sure
-
like, I've at various points used ML, SAS, R, Python (pandas). At this point I think I can appreciate their strengths & weaknesses.
