is this specifically a problem of closed-source software? python packages may change in subtle ways between releases too...

-
certainly but it's documented and has an active tech community outside science and I like reminding people of closed source.
-
but yes, you're right it can happen in C, Python, julia, Matlab.
-
any language, but no language is as badly designed, nor expensive, nor teaches as bad habits as Matlab.
-
when I moved from compsci my brain imploded that people use this in non-cs science
-
it's literally really really really bad. And I'm truly sorry this is what most of us are taught.

yeah. still migrating Matlab codes to Python. wish my dept would see the value in that effort, but incompetents gonna incompetent
-
I really feel sad about this. I hope you're upbeat 24/7.

-
it'll be ok. encouraging to know that others are fighting the same battle. thank you! -
I have always always been baffled by Matlab in science. They must have bribed the right people. Gross. Terrible language.
-
it's in the name: Matrix Lab=) 1st mover advantage on computational sci bc the devs were numerical analysts+applied/comput math ppl
-
spot on--they weren't language people. it's lovely for doing development of numerical algorithms. (disclosure: they're my peeps)
-
but for sooo many other applications it's a suboptimal choice driven by availability (licensing to edu's =\ )
-
in my convinced it's just the name because it's so extortionately expensive!

I'm pretty sure you don't need to hide. I don't think its a controversial thing to say anymore...

-
you'd think!
-
What open source software do you recommend? In EE we use Matlab. I have used Octave. Curious.
-
what are you doing? I generally choose based on the libraries and communities.
-
I've been working on CT/MRI image analysis for a Spine Reconstruction project I'm working on.
-
I have no idea — what's the community of your peers and your managers etc., like?
-
+1 ^ using what people around you are using can be super helpful. I think python would be to go-to language \1
-
but what toolkits/tools you need/want to work with would be a super important consideration \2
