I understand your skepticism, but I'd be reluctant to bet against Jeremy

good thing there's only Facebook's money involved and not ours

-
but to reiterate this isn't about my confidence or lack thereof in anybody but about the titular rhetoric. I wish them the best.
-
I dislike the rhetoric & that makes me sceptical for the reasons I/others have outlined. Perhaps not representative of them tho!

Long term funding for labs to hire career professional staff instead of more PhD students with dim prospects of faculty position.
-
this already exists eg my lab has way more postdocs than PhDs
-
you should work for Facebook's PR team
-
your defence of them and strong disagreement with my critique of them is probably what they are looking for in PR.

-
I'm not defending FaceBook. I just see deep, fixable problems that inhibit science. I think we can all agree about that.

Gov't or foundation support for long-term funding to create and maintain excellent lab & analysis software for anyone to use.
-
have you seen
@SoftwareSaved and@ReScienceEds? We're trying. -
none of your points are actually about Facebook though just about better science more generally. An engineering company won't
-
even have your perspective to start with lower alone actually know how to run science any better than a pharma company.

There are several ways to speed up science beyond the obvious - increased funding for research. cont.

sure but... Smells a lot like any other failed moonshot to me...

I'll eat my words of course. But Markov chains etc., the past is a pretty good predictor of the future.

hmm considering he's got money from Facebook, it means he doesn't have to spend time writing grants = faster science :)
-
not by definition better though and funding process hones your ideas as well as having negative side effects
-
true that. Not sure if he's going for better though, or it's just all hype
