not so in my experience. PI & I did the shortlisting no HR input.

Yeah, HR depts should provide support, not strongly influence the decision.

we recently advertised RA job, 70 applicants, over 1/3 had PhDs. It's crazy out there

think prestige unis this is worse at. Ppl think RA at Ox is > than PS elsewhere.

Yeah, I'm aware of what it's like indeed in both above examples.

In all cases I've witnessed incldng lab manager posts: mixture of nepotism in Ox cases and definitely lots of PI power to choose in general.
