I never thought I'd say this as a white-passing WoC to a white person: "I'm not explaining race to you"; cos she didn't accept I'm brown.
white-passing is great for some privilege then you hit a ceiling and realise your own community won't accept you either.

that convo was w/ a turbo white person who has also said in the past they don't understand ethnicity so not touching them.

I try to completely avoid education on these issues & emotional labour except v specific cases. My experience: it never pays.

ugh. Yeah my sister's dealt with a lot of that. Let's just say she overcompensated a bit due a while
-
but like you said, learned to not bother anymore. Interestingly this would not be an issue in Mx at all...
-
I wonder if it's because Mexicans understand race, culture, and ethnicity more due to not being at the pinnacle of whiteness?
-
hmm kinda. but also its kind of reversed in mexico. whiter=better. but also, ppl understand theres is a lot of skin tone variation
-
you don't think whiter=better everywhere? I think it's true here in UK. In Cyprus at school I was praised for being palest.

-
my point was more that they didn't exclude me from being Cypriot as much as I'm excluded from being British. (I'm both.)
-
yeah that is totally a thing in US vs Mexico too.
-
speaking of all this, my mum: "do you want this makeup foundation — too light for me" and it's not even close to my skin
