I'm really sorry to hear this. "Depressing" is a telling word. Be careful and try to find something that works!
Well, a uni is a company and they will move towards even more company-ness as time goes on.

Also p much nobody gets fired for being bigoted. Unlike say a bank which would cos they prefer not being sued.
-
Eg, a man has had a few complaints about his sexism and nothing had been done by boss except kind of laugh.
-
And this is not a 1-off. This repeats again & again with nothing done cos unlike companies no accountability.
-
No concept of: this is bad for our image or we might get sued. PIs are all powerful. No meaningful line manager.
-
Also most people are not as liberal or as nice as you might imagine. Everything = politics, power, who you know.
-
So I do not see academics as better or worse than a company, just different.
-
And that doesn't mean I don't love my job. I really do. But it's got issues & certain things really need reform.
-
But to say it's somehow pure: most def not.
-
One of biggest shocks PhDs have to deal with is how nasty, corrupt, sci is. Old boys' networks, cliques, etc.
-
A lot of great work is ignored. A lot of great people go unthanked. P-hacking is real. Life is not fair.

-
So "do things that make the world better" I'd say = just as much as true for uni as for government or companies.
