What do sci tweeps think about those who want to remain in sci & do research but do NOT want to be a PI? No mentorship/management interest?

The status of "independent researcher" was common in France for a long time. Today it's hard to be neither "manager" nor "managed".

As an example, today in France it takes 3 PIs to submit a grant application with any chance of success.

Holy shit. I wonder what's the typical case in UK. My gut feeling/experience is 1 PI is enough/typical.
