What do sci tweeps think about those who want to remain in sci & do research but do NOT want to be a PI? No mentorship/management interest?
that's really interesting because I always experience the exact opposite!

I wonder if we can find stats!

really! Hmm. I think of the five cases I know, four were (married) women
-
I just know men. Who sought these positions out. And were thrilled to have them.
-
ahh. I guess there's the rub. I think many women fall into these positions out of necessity or choice (b/c they get time with kids)
-
That doesn't explain why I have never encountered women though and why you men.
-
so are these guys independent researchers or just permanent postdocs?
-
I don't know of anybody who is an independent researcher and not at least try to have mentees and write grants.
-
These positions are called usually "research scientist", which is essentially a permanent position that is like a postdoc.
