The status of "independent researcher" was common in France for a long time. Today it's hard to be neither "manager" nor "managed".

what changed do you think?
-
It's basically impossible to get one-person grants, I'd think.
-
hmm you mean as opposed to a grant that also adds a postdoc or phd student?
-
I think it's more of a "how much do I want to get done" thing, but yes, something like that.
-
oh so you mean that the amount of work required within a grant in order to get it funded has to be > than 1 person can do?
-
That'd be my gut feeling. But I haven't checked or tried, to be fair.
-
I have looked around. Goal: get funding for one PhD student. Impossible as far as I can see.

is that even possible? It's essentially a perpetual postdoc, right?
-
They certainly do exist and are a vital part of academic institutions. Not everyone wants to be a PI.
-
not abundant in every system/country by they exist, certainly.
-
I not heard of any in Earth Sci in UK. From my experience UK system simply not set up for it, unfortunately.
-
The MRC CBU has them for sure.

I think it's important to have this option. Some people have no interest in management. Some people frankly shouldn't be managers

I'm not questioning that. My angle is a little more aligned with them than your comment assumes, is my guess.
