The answer, via the uni's immigration team, is that anyone carrying out a role that the uni would normally hv to pay for counts as "work" /3

In other words, my unpaid lecture is classed by Oxford Uni as "work" b/c if I didn't do it for free they wd otherwise have to pay for it /4
