Here we go again... If you really love Matlab and/or closed source... you probably belong in the past.

closed source is icky tho sorry
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

neural nets <-> biology links can be explained, I think; you do need to be aware of the necessary simplifications involved...
-
are you saying that because of the my pinned preprint or just generally?
-
I was thinking more about
@aechase's comments on one of those neuroscience v. machine learning slides you shared earlier. -
I've taught & been taught NNs from all perspectives: code, maths, theory; only cringe if "bioplausible" is used a lot.
-
I've encountered many weird attitudes to the plausibility or otherwise. People seem oddly defensive...
-
I only think they are plausible in way we describe here – altho I'd avoid due to connotations:http://biorxiv.org/content/early/2016/09/09/071076 …
-
I need to read the paper properly. It's a really key topic right now. I think we're making progress (at last).
-
which one? the levels of analysis aspects?

I admit - I also like Python, so maybe there's a chance I can make it into the future :-)
-
was talking about those who *really love* Matlab and/or closed source. You're likely fine even just by virtue of being a tweep.
-
I admit I do love it - mainly because using matrices/vectors helps me think - now I am happy with numpy etc.
-
do you love how it is closed source too? or just the matrices?
-
I hate it that it's closed source and that I have to contact a license server! But I like the language and environment.

but IMO neural nets are the only real theory we have for neuroscience, and neuroscience *was* the inspiration for machine learning.
-
yeah, connectionism is not exactly the best but I have been working in/with it for best part of a decade.
