@PHDcomics why downer? Most people I did my PhD with didn't stay in academia. Maybe downer cause they can't be open about it?

in my opinion a person who didn't make it to the end of their PhD can't be the ideal person for giving motivation/advice.
-
I'm confused.
We might have interpreted that comic differently! -
I am speaking of the whole of Piled Higher and Deeper and the author himself. Other have mentioned this all before me, so
-
I can't take credit but I feel very uncomfortable with the "industry" around demotivational PhD websites/comics/etc.
-
I do think it's important to acknowledge not all phds are destined to stay. Some can't wait to get out the door, so can be comfort
-
don't disagree they need support but support imho is not appropriate coming from somebody who dropped out as I'm assuming
-
we want them to have role models that are in line with successful completion!

@PHDcomics Haha! But wouldn't you rather read and be aware of the reality and perhaps also how others feel than avoiding it? -
yes and no, as others have said before me: a lot of us feel that people who leave academia and write these things are out of touch.
