It's tough! Could you say: at university level its preferable to use academic title & its good practice for her to do that with you

I always call my GP "Dr" and the clergy "Rev" and the teacher "Mr" or "Ms"

this is a good point. Why are GPs and Revs comfortable with their titles but academics aren't?

titles keep a distance betwn you; useful for GPs, but we like being accessible to students and others?

I think it's tough for students whose cultures/langs require gender marking in respect forms in order to be polite.
