Why do people think cats close to female & dogs = male? Dogs more subordinate. Cats more independent. #PyDataLondonpic.twitter.com/WGsO7AtX1O

@dmoisset I know I was being facetious because of the jokes in the room
@o_guest it gets more interesting in spanish where most nouns have gender so you get a lot of this gender/object association in your mind
@dmoisset Greek has three: neutral and female and male, so yes, I grew up that
@dmoisset although in greek it's not seen the way you might think. Τράπεζα vs τραπέζι: the female = bank; the neutral = table.
@o_guest the cultural clash is more intense when you find out that other gendered language has a different mapping than yours
@dmoisset I wasn't that surprised when I was taught that in French it's le paragraph but in Greek η παράγραφος is f. Same Latin word root 2!
@dmoisset I don't think anything surprised me as a child on that level. Maybe "auto stop" = hitchhiking & "talkiewalkie" = walkie-talkie.
@dmoisset I'm not convinced gendered words are what you imply tbh. Gender in nouns is much more nuanced & complex than just female=delicate.
