They are harvesting interactions. It's attention hijacking.

Sure. They are hyperaware of the followership & clickrate on threads they join. Their timing is discipled. Similar tactics for friend & foe. Their use of language is disciplined but dismissive to their targets. They check in with allies. Lee is piece o'work technically speaking.

@generativist had an excellent thread on attention hijacking yesterday. I'll try to link.

That is... Fascinating. So... It's like a hobby? Or is there some monetary or prestige benefit? I guess some people "attention hijack" in real life, too. But that's smth we're used to, we just dismiss them as annoying, unpleasant people 🙂 And there they don't address thousands.

This is a good question. Skepticism is fuel; one can simply turn that intensity to one's own purpose. Keep on your game. Make rich art.

A related question, but one which might be problematic or silly. Do you think these tactics can/should be coopted? Im not even an active participant (online) but I’m worn out by the rise-above-it style of response. I feel like we’re constantly on the back foot.

No doubt - I don’t need that poison in my veins. But I guess I wonder if some aspect of the (depressingly successful) strategy could be learned from? I don’t know. Maybe it’s not possible to play with that dark magic without internalising it.

No no, I'm with you. I just want to be very careful since I see it as a digital populism.

import influence deploy_shitposter_bots(evil = false, internally_coherent_arguments = true) I know those are unorthodox parameter values but it’s worth a shot.

This introspection is healthy. I think of their threads as a damped signal feeding off of stronger impulses. Influence is an emergent behavior from complex interactions. We can't readily recreate its magic so some go fishing for it. Gatekeepers especially.
