This leads me to the #bropenscience pun - coined by @o_guest. https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1144318491383738368 …
Some people claim that it's a slur... In one sense they are right: it claims that a specific pattern of attitudes and ways of behaving are not a good thing.

But labelling it as a slur counts as the kind of backlash that I've claimed is 100% wrong. Personally, I have all the stereotypical traits of those who might feel attacked. But do I? Not even a tiny bit. Why? Because I know it does not try to negate my struggles or goodwill. 19/n

It's one reason why I'm writing this. If you think that
#bropenscience is a slur, please scroll up, read the whole thread and think again. Your reaction is understandable, but it is not correct. It is also harmful: your own quality of life would improve if you did see why. 20/n1 reply 3 retweets 21 likesShow this thread -
As a matter of policy, perhaps cowardly, on Twitter I don't engage with people who apparently refuse to debate honestly. Honest debate for me *requires* to admit you could be wrong: it uses disagreements as a collaborative effort to mutually learn something from one another. 22/n

Any self declared
#skeptic, who actively backlashes against (perceived) accusations of white people-ing, not checking their privilege and/or punching down, shows that they are not willing to scrutinise their own emotional reactions. Thus, they fail at the first obstacle. 23/n2 replies 3 retweets 18 likesShow this thread -
So no. I'm sorry, but my life is too short, I don't have time for them. I am glad someone else does, though! In fact, I'm in awe - I don't know how you find the strength! 24/n

[Links, evidence and more/self promotion...] If you think that marginalised people do not struggle in tech industries and/or academia, two randomly selected (recent) links: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-truth-about-anti-white-discrimination/ … https://qz.com/911737/silicon-valleys-gender-gap-is-the-result-of-computer-game-marketing-20-years-ago/ … (If you want more - try google!) 25/n

Re our own privileges, here is the thing: you can acknowledge them - it doesn't hurt. I've tried: https://sergiograziosi.wordpress.com/2017/11/25/inequality-and-progress-privilege-and-barnacles/ … I am uncomfortable with some of what I wrote, but not the main point: if you have privileges, you can try to use them well... (I am trying, right now!) 26/n

If anything I wrote caused offence: well, tough. This might help: https://sergiograziosi.wordpress.com/2015/04/19/offence/ … 27/27 and ends... Thanks for reading this far (wow!).
