Hot take: #bropenscience *is* sexist...and alienates the very people that we want on our side. Science is, objectively, dominated by men, but I'm not sure this is the right approach. It feels a little bit like if we got called "lady scientists". Dismissed by gender.

The discussion has been derailed into whether
#bropenscience is a slur or not (which it is...privilege doesn't mean you deserve to be insulted for it). But now the real issue has been forgotten because the priority is now about antagonising men...to what end, precisely?

I might regret these tweets but it's absolutely getting out of hand and we're shooting ourselves in the foot at this point. The way to make allies is *not* by slapping them away for having privilege.

I've been too nervous to open twitter all day in case I'd been ripped to shreds
I got more DMs than replies, mostly from women, and mostly along the lines of "thank you, I've been too scared to speak up".

Great take, thanks for stepping out into this, and I applaud your courage. But that it took courage -- and that your DMs are from women thanking you but too scared to speak up -- speaks volumes about some of the sources of fear and intimidation that are out there.

Lee, you've unleashed a racist storm onto a black woman who called out a white woman for her BS for what? The past 3 days non-stop? Please think about your effects on people here and your relative power compared to us here, seriously.

Even if you didn't "intend" it, it doesn't matter because the end result is the same. You and your tweets contributed to Abeba getting constant BS rained on her for days for calling out some serious anti-woman anti-PoC anti-black nonsense.

Please don't do the same to me or Jade here.

The simplest response is: No, you are wrong. Interestingly, you are wrong so often, one might use stronger terms than "wrong." But there is no "racist storm." There are just wild, toxic, unjustified accusations. Like "you have unleashed a racist storm." Like
