Hot take: #bropenscience *is* sexist...and alienates the very people that we want on our side. Science is, objectively, dominated by men, but I'm not sure this is the right approach. It feels a little bit like if we got called "lady scientists". Dismissed by gender.

The discussion has been derailed into whether
#bropenscience is a slur or not (which it is...privilege doesn't mean you deserve to be insulted for it). But now the real issue has been forgotten because the priority is now about antagonising men...to what end, precisely?

I might regret these tweets but it's absolutely getting out of hand and we're shooting ourselves in the foot at this point. The way to make allies is *not* by slapping them away for having privilege.

I've been too nervous to open twitter all day in case I'd been ripped to shreds
I got more DMs than replies, mostly from women, and mostly along the lines of "thank you, I've been too scared to speak up".

I think I've exhausted myself on this issue so might respectfully withdraw, having said all I needed to. Thank you for being so lovely to me as always
I've said it before but I'll say it again: absolutely not an attack on you. I think you're great and your voice has value
