As I see it (@o_guest can correct me) it is not about *being* male (so "lady scientists" is not analogous); it is about a particular way that masculine acculturation and behaviour intersects with the open science movement. It is a critique of a brand of masculinity, not males.

Yeah, it’s about “bros” it’s not about men. So I don’t consider it a slur at all.

I sort of agree and sort of don't. I think these "bros" are successfully weaponising the word to their advantage, because it is a complex term, and therein lies my problem. It's backfiring, and damaging inclusivity.

Real historians can correct me, but it seems that biased systems historically are changed by alienating some; a 'don't make them mad or they won't be nice to us' approach doesn't work. The non-bros aren't feeling alienated, & the others weren't listening before the tag anyway

How exactly do we know the non-bros are not feeling alienated? It's been a theme in this thread that people in general have been a bit hesitant to express their thoughts on this.

Yeah I'm learning that there are a lot of very pro-diversity and brilliant members of the community that feel alienated.

Is it OK for you to explain why they feel this way or would that violate the privacy of your chat with them? Perhaps distilling it down is possible?

I'm only comfortable in saying as much as I've said already on my private messages. The important point is these people exist, whether we hear their voices or not.

Noted. They feel excluded by me/us who bring attention to lack of inclusivity (amongst other things) in open science because we use a hashtag with bro in it.

There are many ways to address this (some I am opposed to): use a diff phrase to shed light on these issues; not talk about trends, social norms, etc., but individuals and single cases; not say anything negative about open science, only focus on positives and cookies; etc.

However, dialogue which includes enough/as many as possible from the people involved is required. So addressing some people's alienation and fear/discomfort/lack of interest of tweeting openly about it seems paramount before any further steps.
