Hot take: #bropenscience *is* sexist...and alienates the very people that we want on our side. Science is, objectively, dominated by men, but I'm not sure this is the right approach. It feels a little bit like if we got called "lady scientists". Dismissed by gender.

@o_guest can correct me) it is not about *being* male (so "lady scientists" is not analogous); it is about a particular way that masculine acculturation and behaviour intersects with the open science movement. It is a critique of a brand of masculinity, not males.5 replies 2 retweets 43 likes -
Yeah, it’s about “bros” it’s not about men. So I don’t consider it a slur at all.

I sort of agree and sort of don't. I think these "bros" are successfully weaponising the word to their advantage, because it is a complex term, and therein lies my problem. It's backfiring, and damaging inclusivity.
