Hot take: #bropenscience *is* sexist...and alienates the very people that we want on our side. Science is, objectively, dominated by men, but I'm not sure this is the right approach. It feels a little bit like if we got called "lady scientists". Dismissed by gender.

The discussion has been derailed into whether
#bropenscience is a slur or not (which it is...privilege doesn't mean you deserve to be insulted for it). But now the real issue has been forgotten because the priority is now about antagonising men...to what end, precisely?

I might regret these tweets but it's absolutely getting out of hand and we're shooting ourselves in the foot at this point. The way to make allies is *not* by slapping them away for having privilege.

Do you count
#mansplaining as a slur too? By the same logic?1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Personally, yes. I think it's a real phenomena that definitely happens (obvs...I'm sure we've all been there
), but the word "mansplaining" gets used often to dismiss men who are simply joining a conversation and that's where the issue lies for me. A lot of it is the intention.1 reply 0 retweets 7 likes -

Cool, gotcha. I think that’s internally consistent
For the record, I don’t agree that either are slurs. I think they both are highlighting structural power imbalances and they prompt people to think about their privilege and reflect on whether they’re problematic or not.2 replies 0 retweets 10 likes -

No need to go back and forth! I know you’ve thought about your position (as I have mine!) Have a great day!!

FWIW thank you both for sharing here. I appreciate your inputs, especially to see how you see the term @Jade_Pickering (since I know what Kirstie thinks already anyway).

I think you're both brilliant and thoughtful people and I look up to both of you
. Disagreeing doesn't change that! But there is definitely an issue underlying this that I think is getting hidden.
