Her rethorical question is valuable. Think about it. Why do you just accept the trade-off framing without reflection? What does that say?

Oh, wow — evade all responsibility (and defuse all criticism) by framing it as zero-sum where every priority among separate goals is equally defendable..

Indeed that was my point! Somehow I find that framing blatantly indefensible but although the author of the piece repeated the same things multiple times in convos, somehow he found my understanding uncharitable
Way to diffuse criticism indeed.1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -

Yeah, reminds me a bit of a Dutch politician — he makes utterly bizarre statements and then complains the media are misinterpreting him. The author seems to either intentionally misrepresent what’s commonly implied by diversity or claim underrepresented groups lack certain skills

See also my pinned tweet (because my account is locked, I cannot copy my own tweet here). Some (many?) people really think that diversity comes at the cost of quality .....

Still seemed quite relevant (the pinned tweet regarding privilege), esp. with the extremely weird turn this discussion is taking..

“You shouldn’t punch people!” “I donate money to poor Africans so I just have different priorities. Refraining from punching would result in less money being sent.” “I’m not sure it works that way..” “It’s undeniable, no need for evidence which I always demand from everyone.”

agreed about trade-off framing. Lots of wisdom of crowd work showing that diversity of viewpoint (etc.,) leads to more robust and accurate crowd performance. Diversity isn't just one positive factor, but is integral to superior performance.

Thank you all! It's so pathetic to have to explain why diversity is important and why when a minority of people explain that diversity is important you can't say "oh, but a majority are cool". I'm still recovering.
