check out some of the special issues in the journal - computer mediated communication - well just the whole field in general has some interesting stuff on this topic
So it looks like things go a certain way when moving from online to offline and vice versa. People online seem to actually be a good/good enough representation of themselves. If so, there's some really horrible people out there. I was hoping the bad ones would at least pretend to be better. Not that I'd agree to meet them. I've only met two so far as I'm a bit remote, but both wonderful people.
