Anybody know of a study on designing cat-flap affordances? Cat-flaps are difficult to learn (for cats). Locking at night confuses: cat just learned the trick, now it doesn't work anymore. (btw I propose to actively involve cats in a redesign) @PsychScientists @jaspervankuijkpic.twitter.com/oNA1G67xAG

We started by combining the night locking with a visual block (piece of paper taped over it) which he quickly learned. Then eventually we stopped putting up the paper and he still retained the idea that this thing only works sometimes.

Exactly my thought!! I was thinking, why is the 'lock' not an extra cover that you just put over it. That could just be part of the actual design of these things.

What about the cat flaps with the chip in so it only opens for your own cat(s)? Those are a solution too, right?

Yes this is the one! It works magically. However, the point is: the cat doesn't understand how to open the flap *at all*. It has nothing to do with the electronics other than that the chip takes a millisecond to respond which (perhaps) makes it even harder for the cat to 'get it'

Have you seen that video with the cat getting angry at the cat flap? Near the end (it's annotated).https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/05/researchers-strapped-video-cameras-16-cats-and-let-them-do-their-thing-here-s-what-they …

I saw it - yes, you can already see that even though these cats learn it, it's not a very natural thing. I imagine we could really improve on designing the flap such that it naturally affords going through (for a cat).

Works well for us, although they prefer to use doors, windows -- really any other opening -- given the opportunity. Or to just sit outside and shout for no apparent reason 🙄
