I believe that this exchange is a metaphor for a deep divide in psych sciencehttps://twitter.com/richarddmorey/status/1147118154814021639 …

Yea when I saw the original tweet I thought: that's bad but not nearly as bad as all the harrassment cases. I forgot about the torture scandal.

But for real: torture scandal and

are gonna be what’s remembered as dark stains on our collective history, not file drawers3 replies 3 retweets 40 likes -
Been thinking about this a bit more. Honestly, the worst case scenario for failing to report null results is that, one day, large sections of our current field are viewed by future generations the same way we view phrenology or psychodynamic theory... (1/2)

Bad science can be a major problem, but elevating file drawers to a higher level than fraud, torture, and sexual assault? I just don’t see how that math works (2/2)

I can't see the original tweet because someone has blocked me. Torture is bad, but it is not something all scientists do. Publication bias is in the category of not letting women vote, or gay people get married. An entire society thought it was ok at one time but was wrong.

Despite being someone who greatly dislikes publication bias/its impact, I'm still going to take the radical position that overt discrimination against women, overt discrimination against queer folks, and torture, are--and will continue to be seen--as worse crimes of human history

and the reason would be that psychological science is so meaningless that it doesn't matter whether published results are true or false (Schimmack, 2012). But what if false results had real consequences?
