That’s why I hope there is place for people like me in diversity, equality, inclusion efforts. I hope to be part of this without fully subscribing to some labels. I hope that is possible.

Bringing in more men isn't the problem either... The toxic gas is sexism. Remove the sexism.

Use the fact they are repelled by
#bropenscience to ask them why. Are they bros? Maybe they aren't feminists? Or maybe — extremely important for ANY science not just#openscience — they don't like criticism?2 replies 1 retweet 4 likes -
Also just to clarify: "I actually agree with you that pointing out, e.g., sexism in an area will deter women. BUT!" Women are being 100% rational actors by not wanting to go into an area they perceive for whatever reason as having sexism. But I think there's more here...

The fact that women close to you, for example & if I understand you correctly, don't want to do
#openscience and prefer to do something else... is a problem you have to solve if you care, as an ally.1 reply 1 retweet 4 likes -
Give them role models, make them feel safe, make them feel listened to, tell them to reach out and talk to me. If me just coining a term like
#bropenscience is enough to catalyse them, SOMETHING DEEPER must be going on. Find out what is pushing them away.1 reply 1 retweet 4 likes -
Perhaps trying to balance the insult and collateral effects of using the term
#bropenscience against the effect of machismo, not just as a political discourse but in women’s everyday life could help you understand that >1 reply 1 retweet 4 likes -
Olivia’s pun is not just needed but precisely a way to discriminate among men. Those offended or deterred by it are certainly not allies.

But can some of them become allies? Perhaps that's what I'm getting at. Calling out sexism is vital. And so supporting even little steps in the right direction.

Hardly so when they prove themselves unable to listen and rather they keep trying to push their views instead.

Yeah, "sit down and listen" sounds harsh but it's often the only way.
