Unpopular opinion: In exactly the same way the aggression called out by #bropenscience harms open science at large, so does this aggressively genderized label #bropenscience itself harm the cause for diversity and equality at large. Thread

Please don’t. You asked what you could do as an ally. Imho, this is not it.

1/3 Conflicted... I think
#bropenscience is a very funny term, and recognise the type of people it calls out. I also agree with@LennartVerhagen that aggression isn’t unique to one identity. For example, the person who coined the term can also be a bit of a bro sometimes.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

2/3 Context to that is the time
@o_guest misrepresented my blog on open source in science, and suggested I had bad intentions. I (PhD student at the time) felt attacked by more senior researcher in my department. (Thread upwards here: https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/771124227349020672?s=21 … )Edwin Dalmaijer added,

3/3 That said, it was also much easier for me to brush the whole thing off, compared to people who have had much more experience with verbal aggression turning to physical aggression. And that difference in perception of aggressive debate might be a core issue here?

Interesting you described me as bro-y, I've seen a lot of people say it can't be applied to women. If I am bro-y, that's not a good thing.
So what exactly did I do that was bro-y?2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -
I linked the specific interaction that I was referring to. Also, just to clarify: we’ve had nothing but pleasant interactions in person, so my “can be a bit of a bro” isn’t a blanket personality statement, but rather a situation-specific one. Hope that was clear! :)
