Unpopular opinion: In exactly the same way the aggression called out by #bropenscience harms open science at large, so does this aggressively genderized label #bropenscience itself harm the cause for diversity and equality at large. Thread

Also I have clarified it's also a pun, or even mostly a pun, so you can probably explain it using my logic. I'll ink you to previous cases...
-
And a good pun at that! I remember laughing out loud when I first read it. Very recognisable. More recently, I have noticed how it deters others at who this pun was not directed.
-
Do you mean minorities in science? In all honestly, can you tell them to DM me? If they like my puns enough to be worried about open science, they should be happy — I hope — I have a chat. I actually agree with you that pointing out, e.g., sexism in an area will deter women. BUT!
-
BUT!!! The thing is to fix sexism you DO NOT bring in more women. It's like fixing a toxic gas leak in a mine because your canary died and thinking more canaries will fix it!
-
Yes exactly this. A 1000 times this!!! And when I try to bring in more men, some of them feel repelled by labels like
#bropenscience. Ironically. -
That’s why I hope there is place for people like me in diversity, equality, inclusion efforts. I hope to be part of this without fully subscribing to some labels. I hope that is possible.
-
Bringing in more men isn't the problem either... The toxic gas is sexism. Remove the sexism.
-
Use the fact they are repelled by
#bropenscience to ask them why. Are they bros? Maybe they aren't feminists? Or maybe — extremely important for ANY science not just#openscience — they don't like criticism? - 2 more replies
