Are academic journals necessary? Can’t we just host pdfs on OSF and incorporate peer review there?

This is surely more efficient than libraries trying to figure out 10 million different subscriptions. We can just send a donation to one group. Plus open access journals are expensive, even if you’re ethical. It’s hard to make things efficient if you’re a small group.

Why OSF specifically though? Putting all eggs in one bastard seems to be a bad idea.

U make a good point. I don’t think it has to be osf. Putting everything in one place is a recipe for disaster. But I feel kinda odd having so many outlets. How do u reckon we could improve the current system cost wise?

So tricky! But yes, maybe we should learn more from fields that have been doing preprints for decades. Computer science and economics, for example.
