The bro-iest, wannabe macho-est (given context of course — we’re talking about scientists, so macho/bro-ism will manifest in very specific ways) people seem to get upset.

And that’s great, they are the ones that probably need to take a step back and understand that their aggressiveness and even their overrepresentation can push people away.

Their behaviour won’t stop people who believe in
#openscience from doing it who have the conviction and resources to, but it might nonetheless fracture the open science community, create negative vibes, etc. The opposite of openness!Show this thread -
If the idea of an open science community or movement upsets you inherently: oh, dear, this is probably not for you. I care about open science and have practised it in every project I have ever worked on to the best of my abilities.

The fact my making a pun and criticism about certain vocal people’s behaviours by calling them
#bropenscience often results in replies of “why do you hate#openscience?” is telling.Show this thread -
#Bropenscience NEEDS to be called out for#openscience to fulfil its goal. It will fail as a movement and community without people/us making equity, diversity and inclusivity efforts. Because this is what happens if not: we recapitulate existing biases!https://www.wired.com/2017/06/diversity-open-source-even-worse-tech-overall/ …Show this thread -
Who are we opening science up to if not those who historically have had less access to it? One of the core tenets of
#openscience is: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion. [Image credit:@daniellecrobins &@rchampieux.]pic.twitter.com/E1C09MsPc2

It's telling that folk are rattled by this term, I think that alone justifies its existence and represents a much deeper problem -- you've tapped a nerve in exactly the right people. I 100% support the term, its utility FAR outweighs any minor quibbles against.

There's beauty in a pun that initially amuses but subsequently exposes issues, a sort of humor missile if you will. Hell, if wordplay rattles people to their core, there's need for serious reflection. Turns out for some, *open* collapses when a mirror is placed in front of them.
-
Yup, it's a catalyst. This is why I love labels (when used this way).
-
Yep! this is why I'm baffled that people don't like it, afaics it's one of the more effective ways of bringing about important conversation.
-
Oh, thanks! Honoured you think that and glad to be helpful with my silly-ass pun!
-
Absolutely, and I take secret delight (don't tell anyone) in seeing it described as silly-ass knowing that it's quite a powerful force :)

Yep. I talked with a colleague at a department known for being very data science-y & open science-y. I asked "how's the environment there?" and he said "it's so great I love it!" so I asked "I've...heard it's kinda bro-y?" and he was like "oh damn, yeah, it is."

Gosh, what a

you are.
Off you pop! -
Do you imagine anyone cares, one way or the other, about this display of narcissistic fatuousness?
-
And yet, you responded to OP with an ad hominem attack ... and then doubled down on attempting to hitch your wagon to OP's tweet. You keep on pwning yourself, bro ... I'm blocking you because your stupidity might be contagious.
