I have the same fear of violent men (at least I think it's the same fear), but I also have learned to be wary around other women. I can't afford to make mistakes in how I construct and perform my femininity, so I need to learn quickly how to do it "right"pic.twitter.com/vQeuYSiUEF

So that's the function of the selfies. They're a very powerful tool for learning how I appear to others, and when I post them on twitter and elsewhere there's a lot of information I get back about how my appearance is interpretedpic.twitter.com/BAt1UdYzPm

It's not arbitrary, and although it's superficially light hearted it serves a very serious purpose. Plus, it's just kind of nice to see pictures of myself that actually look like *me*pic.twitter.com/l0ZlPppeJR

I remember you once saying you're like a teenage girl who's trying to learn how to be a woman. I thought that was very apt and gave me a clearer perspective on those who I see who don't 'pass' and this not-passing is exacerbated by the over-the-top femininity.

I think it's a useful analogy. Trans women are often criticised for "caricaturing" cis women, especially early in transition, but I think it's better characterised as trial-and-error learning. It takes time to learn the rules, and we all have to pass through an uncanny valley

From my (biased) perspective and experience the transphobic idea that trans women are "over the top" (with emotions, typically anger, with "femme"-ness or sexiness) is a core of transmisogyny.

If a cis woman does the exact same stuff she faces a different type of pushback, one that doesn't label her a "tourist" into femininity or strip her of her gender and occasionally she faces nothing. If I post a sexualised image of myself nobody will comment that I'm a pervert.

However, and based on what many trans women report including Danielle above, I have faced transmisogyny even though I am not a trans woman, exactly because trans women can and do very often pass.

So because I support trans rights men (chasers as well as others types of transphobes) have directed some pretty nasty stuff at me. Including the basic gender stripping ("you will always be a dude") and the hitting on me to talk about t-blockers and hooking up. 😢

I see a lot of the issues that trans women face, esp. in discussions with @ContentLeftist and others, are similar in some important way to those WoC face. WoC, of which I am but pass as white, face a much higher bar when we seek to join (white) women.

WoC are seen as angry, having the wrong body shape, too much hair, ugly (the big nose thing seems to be a recurring theme), our voices are wrong, we're the wrong height, on and on. A lot of issues that cause transmisogyny also cause misogynoir, colorism, colonialism.

Many trans/WoC feminists are asking non-TERF white feminists to make room for us to breathe and it's very upsetting as a state of affairs. So no wonder we might be angry or self-affirming with selfies or whatever. In many cases, we're stronger because we've been through more too.
