Guess what?! Some men actually think that white men are the most discriminated against in academia. They do. For real.

They need to say this to maintain white male privilege. On a systemic level, this is what the system requires them to do to maintain itself.

That, and cognitive dissonance. They *also* have a hard time finding a job and their brains simply cannot accept that they have a hard time getting a job *despite* being privileged. Ergo, they think others (women) must have an easier time. Stupid, but that's how brains work.

That's a great explanation! How can I put it into simple words to explain it to male colleagues who think women are taking their jobs. One even told me that in some uni in NL opted for hiring only female postdocs to compensate the gender imbalance and it's unfair

This might not be what you want to read, but you probably need to drop these people from your social life. Emotional and intellectual labour, e.g., you explaining to men what sexism and privilege is is a part of the sexism directed at you by the system.pic.twitter.com/yrRJOUrfYJ

I fully sympathize with that emotion. As a white privileged male *some* of my male colleague understand when I point them to statistics like this one (titles in English from left to right are: student, master degree, PhD student, assist prof, associate prof, full prof).pic.twitter.com/MrNgHQNgJW

Have you seen the statistics outlining the difference between the sexes on interest? And have you brocken these particlar stats down by department? Differences in outcomes doesn't always mean discrimination.

Such a huge disparity between the percentages of female students and female professors can't simply be explained by a difference in interests.

No shit. In the old days professors used to be 99% white males. And since professors hire professors, it's only changing veeeery slowly. Note that this is in the Netherlands, where the situation is particularly backwards, despite feigning to be a progressive nation.

I was agreeing with your point, that what you showed reveals structural problems 😅. I would like to hear more about what you mean with the particular backwardness of the Netherlands though. As a Dutch person, living and studying in the Netherlands, I agree that in a lot of ⇒

IMHO Netherlands academics are pretty bad if I compare my experiences talking to the various flavours of Westerners in science in the last 10 years. But those are just my experiences.
