If someone is from an underrepresented group, there are real reasons why they are underrepresented. If they are willing to share about their experiences, we need to listen, empathize, and support instead of doubt, criticize, and dismiss.

When I am asked why there aren't more women in physics I have often said that really I am the wrong person to ask, since I am here. I can share what I know, but may be missing some experience that drives many out of the field.

The challenge of hearing those who aren’t in the room is real & bears a lot of thought & attention. I think it’s an important piece of many issues w/ which we struggle (e.g., exposing trainees to careers outside of academia), particularly the problem of underrepresentation.
