1) I strongly suggest we should abandon it. I don't think it's helpful and may even be harmful. No one has given me a good reason for keeping it. Most reasons are 'because we worked hard'. Which of course every profession does...

2) Or many women prefer using Dr as a gender-neutral title. This I totally get, but what about women who haven't completed a Ph.D.? I am open to change my but at the moment I can't see any reason to use a title which suggest so much self-importance.

I’d vote to get rid of it if we also got rid of *all* other titles, but not if the alternative is Mr and Mrs/Ms/Miss.

Removing it will affect women who have it more than it will affect men, much more IMHO. So my counter to you
@AcademicAngsty is why do YOU get to decide to harm women?2 replies 0 retweets 5 likes -

Because I think the title causes more harm than it would if no longer used.

Are you a man? Getting the title has helped me so much in life.

I'm sure it's helped you. And I'm getting that, and I think that's come through clearly. I am non-binary.

So ever since I got "Dr", I have received the healthcare I was begging for on the NHS (lfe-saving stuff), I have been treated better in every situation in which people knew my title. I literally do not think I would be alive if I didn't get it because of the causal chain here.

Isn't it horrible that a simple title is needed for all that? I guess this feeds into my hate for it.

I am an LGBT person from the Middle East in the UK and without the title, I would be dead — never would have escaped domestic abuse or received the right healthcare. And I strongly believe I am not alone here AT ALL.

Fight sexism with us. If you are an ally/on our side, why do you want to take away what helps me/us navigate the sexist world we live in?

I do. Issue is with the privilege of it. It's great if it's helped you but that doesn't negate the unfairness of it all. E.g. imagine a poll where we get rid of ALL titles. You may be in favour. But a man is arguing they want to keep 'Mr' because of the privledge it's provided.
