In light of many tweets. I propose this poll. Please share far and wide and let's find out what our academic friends think of this issue. Would be great to see the reason for your response as well. Should we abandon the use of 'Dr'?

I think you missed the point. My point is that 'Dr' is elitism. Using the term Dr has connotations regardless of gender. Many women use it to 'escape sexism' which I get. But the latter doesn't negate the former.
-
I think you're missing my point. Sexism is a kind of elitism too.
-
Yes, it is. I guess it comes down to priorities do you want to escape sexism or do you want to negate elitism?
-
Why is it zero sum? And why do you think the title Dr itself causes elitism?
-
I don't think it causes it but it perpetuates it.
-
Dr. isn't more preferred by women only because it's an alternative to choosing between prefixes with various social connotations; it's also because it's a signifier of one's qualifications in a world that tends to discount/downgrade women's.
-
This exactly
it’s unbelievable how differently I am treated once people (men) hear my title. I get respect I didn’t before. Which is wrong that I need a title to get that. But I’m not letting go of my ‘Dr’ thank you.
