Hey Twitter friends! I want to buy a laptop that's worth the money I will pay and runs Unix, specifically Ubuntu/Mint preferably (don't care about Windows at all) — what's a solid and cute machine in your opinions? ☺️

Whatever you choose, I strongly recommend a solid state disk. You only get 256GB for the price of a 2TB HDD, but unless you have a huge movie library that's enough, and the performance difference is amazing. (If you already have an SSD then you'll know this!)

I already have a 1TB solid state on my work desktop machine, yep.

Seriously it's like your secondary storage just became very slightly slower RAM. (Do we still say RAM? It was always a silly name. ROMs are random-access too.)

I currently have 128GB of RAM. The real question is do we even need HDDs? 😂

I guess we still need folders for Dropbox to have something to map on to.

Any ideas for a reasonably high-spec laptop that doesn't run hot?

No idea. I don't use it on my lap so I don't care. Also, asking for laptop tips is hard because the models only stick around for 6-9 months and that's at the marketing level; the whole innards can change after 3, with the same label (have to look in the BIOS for the real model#)
