Hey Twitter friends!
I want to buy a laptop that's worth the money I will pay and runs Unix, specifically Ubuntu/Mint preferably (don't care about Windows at all) — what's a solid and cute machine in your opinions?

I respectfully suggest dual-booting (shock horror - don't be mad with me!). There will be problem-solving until you get your Mint running beautifully if you d-b a Mac, but it will be worth it. Don't get an HP Spectre !
-
A Mac? It's already Unix, why?
-
real linux boot: freedom. Mac side: damned proprietary stuff collabs and journals want.

I have survived a decade without Word, I think I can keep going.

Macs were very good for coding maybe 10 years ago.. but I would say the OSX has moved too far away, requiring lots of "homebrew" and "conda" etc. to install basic packages, which can get messy. This is not to mention the app-ifying that moves it away from a personal computer.
-
That's what I'm alluding to.

I almost got the newest Dell XPS; powerful machine, ships with Ubuntu, trackpad is unusually good and keyboard has great travel. Ultimately went with Mac cuz I just like the OS too much and trackpad functionality is most important too me, but it was the first time a laptop...
-
Not a fan of OS on Mac so tell me more about Dell — I fear it's not going to look/feel good...?

I'm a Mac person, simply because they are reliable and there is virtually no variety. Everything else looks like something from Independence Day circa 1996 (still). Bootcamp would let you run Linux on a Mac - but worth the money? Probably not!

I feel you, sucked into the MacBook world for the last few years and I'm sick of having to remap keys and deal with the pointless section key (which I usually try to make into a proper # key, but Karabiner Elements doesn't seem to be doing that now).
