Timely tag.
@karthikpan@lakens@siminevazire@KevinZollman Thomas Morgan and I have been working on a paper about how Psych can benefit by building on established theories in other disciplines, using signaling theory from bio/econ as an example. Will post pre-print soon.3 replies 1 retweet 13 likes -

Leo, I want to apologize for getting defensive about this paper idea. On first read, I thought you were suggesting that Psych is lacking in theory and needs help from other disciplines. That's a sore spot for me, since many of us do work on fundamental theory and I reacted badly

I agree that there is a theory problem in Psych, but it's not that the theory needs to be built, rather, the theories we develop are generally ignored by the mainstream in the push for flashy, counterintuitive findings

1/n Thanks for the response, Brad. It created an interesting discussion. All disciplines have specialized repositories of information, which other disciplines can benefit from. In fact, we know that this combination of specialization and occasional sharing promotes innovation....

3/n So, even those disciplines within Psych that regularly use formal modeling may benefit from learning about existing models in other fields, echoing
@psmaldino 's comments. Our paper focuses on the publication process, which has had much more verbal than formal theorizing....1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

4/4. So, we think that it makes a useful contribution, both via sharing existing ideas from econ/bio with psychologists, and via formalizing otherwise vague verbal models. Maybe it doesn't and it's all shit - let's see what you think once you have more info about the paper :)

Right. So it's similar to @zerdeve's work as opposed a piece on what everyone else thought you meant. That makes more sense as a position. I guess you managed to inadvertently troll quite a few people.

Yes, if it's about how we improve our appreciation and dissemination of theory, we definitely need more of that. I disagree though that we should try to build on theories from other disciplines, at least not until we've understood our own theories better.
