To elaborate: the fields of perception, cognition, learning and decision making all have extensive theoretical literatures, with a lot of formal modelling, theory testing and so on. Mathematical psychology has been around for a *long* time.

Absolutely, and that work is fantastic. But until it's incorporated into a larger framework that involves socioecological environments and evolution, it's like a bit like Plato's cave dwellers talking about their brilliant theory of shadow behavior.

Would you be surprised to hear that this sounds rather dismissive? Perception and cognition are not just pale shadows of social psychology

I totally agree. And I don't mean to be dismissive. I started out in rad school pure cognitive -- neural networks, reinforcement learning, memory and perception. If anything, the cognitive perspective is much richer than the typical social perspective, in part BECAUSE models.

This stared because @LeoTiokhin posted a teaser for an upcoming paper that talks about how some other fields have also learned some stuff that might be useful for psych researchers, and it got pshaw'ed to hell for no good reason.

All of these discussions (and publications) occur in a historical context that creates expectations for how things are likely to play out.

Aside: I learned a new word (pshaw). Is it one of those words that only people on Twitter know or can I use it freely in the world?

It's a dated word by I have heard/read it before. It's like poopoo (verb).
