It's not even that so much. It's this bizarre idea that British Empire brought world into communication. As though there was no cross-cultural contact and travel before it.

Indeed. There is so much to unpack. One big one is most people outside the West are multilingual. The reason English(-speaking) people think being English-speaking is a massive deal is because they are WEIRD and monolingual and can't cope otherwise.
