Then add the unpaid paper reviewing that you do, but does not count towards your work hours... or even the conference organising, which is also not appreciated by universities... Ok I need to stop to avoid becomingdepressed myself.

I've been working in academia for a decade. It's just normal being depressed.

Indeed! I am having one of those days that you feel like that even Reviewer #2 is in holidays and would rather keep it like that

Thanks y'all this really turned into a thread encouraging me to consider a phd more seriously, I will keep you two in mind for my acknowledgements But really, I still prefer it to the industry, at least you know people do their work out of passion and interest and not $$$

Before going after a PhD, few people (with/in process of getting a PhD) told me to reconsider. Their argument was always: if we can make you change your mind, then you shouldn't had gone for one. Now that I am done with mine, I agree that it is all about your state of mind 1/2

Staying determined and not doing it for the title or money (what money? XD). If you can do that, the rest tend to eventually sort themselves out. 2/2

Ehhh yeah that's why I'm taking a while to enjoy this first job and learn about research, what I like to study/find out/etc before really going for a phd. I can't NOT have a topic in mind for applying for that reason too hah.

I think it's really complex, but let's talk in person. I don't agree 100% with doing it just to enjoy it because sadly everybody gets depressed during. So the enjoyment almost always has a limited shelf-life. You have to do it as a passport to something else.

Mhmm! My sister started her phd a few months ago so I'll also eventually get a super close look into the process as well, even though her topic + personality + reasons for phd are pretty different from mine hah. Dooooooo let me know when we're in the same country tho!!
