my first shock was that, to be published, authors had to pay for a full expensive registration and also attend the most-likely-abroad conference

Welcome to academia! :-P Conference fees are nowhere as controversial as journal/proceedings fees are, i.e. for open access rights, extra space, and even colour figures sometimes!

Then add the unpaid paper reviewing that you do, but does not count towards your work hours... or even the conference organising, which is also not appreciated by universities... Ok I need to stop to avoid becomingdepressed myself.

I've been working in academia for a decade. It's just normal being depressed.

Indeed! I am having one of those days that you feel like that even Reviewer #2 is in holidays and would rather keep it like that

Thanks y'all this really turned into a thread encouraging me to consider a phd more seriously, I will keep you two in mind for my acknowledgements But really, I still prefer it to the industry, at least you know people do their work out of passion and interest and not $$$

I finished my PhD in 2014, so it's been a while, but not that long, so, if you have questions please ask me in DMs. I think it's a very specific journey and part of me regrets some aspects and things could have gone better. Doing it later in life (a bit) is good!

I agree people do it for passion but many do it for passion for their ego. And it's, depending on the area, quite a corrupt Ponzi scheme. But we're in capitalism, so what isn't?

Mmmmyeah I'll be sliding into ur DMs in the next few months as I start maybe thinking about considering things that might eventually lead to a phd! And ++++++ on that capitalism comment lmao I was naively thinking industry-->academia would be stepping out of capitalism a bit. lol
